Mania

People of lower acuity mania will become interested in many things at once or have many projects going but may not be able to complete any of them. However, sometimes mania can be a simple feeling one has in themselves, as in, “I feel manic”, but its affect, or appearance of the feeling, is depressed; this experience one has happening over and over can qualify a diagnosis of Bipolar. In other instances, one’s ability to focus or concentrate on one thing, say, having a conversation with someone, is strained. People suffering from this might withdraw or ‘dissociate’ on one hand, or on the other abruptly interrupt others with their ideas, or even insult then with odd or even drastic opinions, or suddenly walk away to something else. Often with more intense manifestation of mania, irritability can be more pronounced and result in pronounced anger. This can be characterized by paranoia and odd thought processes, but the individual may not realize these are odd, in fact, in the moment they seem very sensible to the person even as they are excessively worried and acting out on these delusions. Sometimes a person suffering from acute mania can become detached from reality, such as, believing they are President of the United States are part of a secret organization for which they are on a mission. On the other side of the affect, a person may become intensely euphoric, appearing on one hand as expressing great love and joy for people or things, then on the other, expressing the feeling they have become one with God, or that plants are speaking with them. More overt symptoms of mania can include what we call, ‘flight of ideas’, ‘pressured speech’. Interacting with people suffering from these mental problems in the former can feel like the person is just eccentric or very strange, or in the latter unable to get out what they really want to say, like there is more they are trying to communicate than their mouth and words can get out.
